Electrical modeling of the cell-electrode interface for recording neural activity from high-density microelectrode arrays

چکیده
Accurate electrical models are needed to support the design of modern microelectrode arrays. The point-contact model is presented thoroughly, and an area-contact model is analytically derived in order to model the electrical characteristics of the cell–electrode interface at subcellular resolution. An optimum electrode diameter for recording the electrical activity of neurons is analytically determined at tip electrodes are characterized using the area-contact model. An improvement of the electrical coupling up to 20dB is observed for small electrodes, in simulation. & 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Multi-electrode arrays technology for the non-invasive recording of neural signals: a review article
The recording of electrophysiological activities of brain neurons in the last half-century has been considered as one of the effective tools for the development of neuroscience. One of the techniques for recording the activity of nerve cells is the multi-electrode arrays (MEAs). Microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are usually employed to record electrical signals from electrogenic cells like neurons o...
متن کاملShielded Coaxial Optrode Arrays for Neurophysiology
Recent progress in the study of the brain has been greatly facilitated by the development of new tools capable of minimally-invasive, robust coupling to neuronal assemblies. Two prominent examples are the microelectrode array (MEA), which enables electrical signals from large numbers of neurons to be detected and spatiotemporally correlated, and optogenetics, which enables the electrical activi...
متن کاملNeuronal cell loss accompanies the brain tissue response to chronically implanted silicon microelectrode arrays.
Implantable silicon microelectrode array technology is a useful technique for obtaining high-density, high-spatial resolution sampling of neuronal activity within the brain and holds promise for a wide range of neuroprosthetic applications. One of the limitations of the current technology is inconsistent performance in long-term applications. Although the brain tissue response is believed to be...
متن کاملTriangular neuronal networks on microelectrode arrays: an approach to improve the properties of low-density networks for extracellular recording
Multi-unit recording from neuronal networks cultured on microelectrode arrays (MEAs) is a widely used approach to achieve basic understanding of network properties, as well as the realization of cell-based biosensors. However, network formation is random under primary culture conditions, and the cellular arrangement often performs an insufficient fit to the electrode positions. This results in ...
متن کاملRecording from defined populations of retinal ganglion cells using a high-density CMOS-integrated microelectrode array with real-time switchable electrode selection.
In order to understand how retinal circuits encode visual scenes, the neural activity of defined populations of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) has to be investigated. Here we report on a method for stimulating, detecting, and subsequently targeting defined populations of RGCs. The possibility to select a distinct population of RGCs for extracellular recording enables the design of experiments th...
